The Opportunity

Join the Memphis Grizzlies as the Senior Manager, Financial Compliance & Payroll, responsible for leading the organization’s tax reporting, financial compliance, and payroll operations. This role oversees all federal and state partnership tax filings, manages complex tax schedules and allocations, and ensures accurate, timely payroll execution in full compliance with regulatory requirements.

 

You’ll partner with internal leaders, external tax advisors, and league finance teams while managing compliance audits, improving processes, and supporting high‑impact financial projects. This role is ideal for a detail‑focused, proactive professional who thrives in a fast‑paced environment and is excited to elevate financial operations for a major sports organization.

In This Role You Will

Tax Compliance & Reporting

  • Lead the preparation of schedules to facilitate the filing of all tax forms by the external tax partner.
  • Review all tax schedules prepared by external tax partner including but not limited to the Federal Form 1065, partner K-1s and state tax returns and apportionments.
  • Manage owner allocations of profit/loss calculations.
  • Oversee calculations of Section 734(b) and 743(b) basis adjustments.
  • Calculate, file and manage payment of sales tax filings and other local compliance filings.
  • Manage annual report filings/registrations for all legal entities.
  • Work with external partner to stay apprised and communicate tax implications for financial transactions and events to executive management.

Payroll Operations

  • Provide oversight and support the organization’s Payroll Manager.
  • Provide back-up to payroll processes to ensure accurate payroll transactions including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions.
  • Collaborate with the NBA league office and other team’s finance departments to calculate settlements related to player trades.
  • Prepare all payroll schedules in support of league’s financial reporting and audits.
  • Address compensation and withholding inquiries from players and/or players’ representatives.

Additional Compliance

  • Complete and submit compliance certificates for all debt instruments.
  • Manage 401k and workers’ compensation audits.
  • Track and submit all remittances in accordance with Tennessee escheat laws.
  • Other special projects related to tax and/or payroll as assigned.

The Experience You Will Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in accounting.
  • CPA designation.
  • Four to six years’ tax preparation experience with a Big 4 or large regional accounting firm, specializing in LLC/partnership entities.
  • Knowledge of tax preparation systems, preferably Thomas Reuters’ GoSystems.
  • Advanced user of Microsoft products.
  • Experienced user of accounting systems.
  • Superior attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively and collaboratively with non-financial colleagues.
  • Possess a mind-set to utilize technology to increase efficiencies.
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends and holidays when needed.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle conflicting deadlines.

Nice to Have:

  • Professional sports industry finance/accounting experience.
  • Experience using NetSuite and AI accounting solutions.
